The'modpocalypse' in Skyrim Anniversary Edition has been mitigated in part by a major modder gaining early access.
Bethesda granted early access to Skyrim Anniversary Edition to the creator of the game's foundational Skyrim Script Extender.
Skyrim Anniversary Edition is the newest edition of The Elder Scrolls V to be released. That means everyone can now start building together their own own version of Skyrim, replete with all of their favorite Skyrim modifications. Mostly, at any rate. Skyrim Script Extender, one of the cornerstone modules needed by a slew of other Skyrim mods, was gearing up for a full-fledged "modpocalypse." Fortunately, Bethesda provided the makers of SKSE early access to the Skyrim Anniversary Edition, and they believe the prognosis for the Skyrim Special Edition modding community is now "better than imagined."
Extrwi, the creator of SKSE, warned last month that the Skyrim Anniversary Edition will be "far more damaging to the modding community than is usually recognized." Skyrim modifications, as is frequently the case with game modifying, may be as complex as a Jenga tower. Your favorite modules may be the center bricks in a tower of dependencies atop the Skyrim Script Extender mod. Skyrim Special Edition modifications like SkyUI and Legacy of the Dragonborn, for example, both need SKSE.

Extrwi projected that, anticipating the modpocalypse, they would be able to hurry through a temporary upgrade to SKSE within a few nights, but that this would not completely cure the problem.
That's exactly what occurred, it turns out, but thankfully it happened before the Skyrim AE update rather than after. Extrwi claims in a recent post that Bethesda provided them with early access to the new version and that they've spent the previous week and a half preparing for the Skyrim AE upgrade.
"The risk of issues is greater than normal due to the enormous quantity of manual code change necessary for this version," they explain. "However, things seem to be functioning better than intended."
This is still a fast repair version, and Extrwi reiterates from last month's article that other plugin modifications would still need work from their developers in order to stay compatible.
"If you have an existing mod installed on pre-AE that you want to maintain functioning, this is not an indication that you should update and start utilizing this version of SKSE," Extrwi warns. "However, if you've already upgraded to AE and are feeling daring, give this a go."
The Skyrim AE early build script extender is now available on the SKSE website. Extrwi recently stated that the safest approach for devoted modders is to prevent your Skyrim Special Edition from downloading the free game update, which has already started. If you weren't able to stop the update, the good news is that the Skyrim Special Edition modding scene is already beginning to stabilize.
